Red Dragon Canoe Club - Shipman Mansion
These are the times that try men’s souls was written by Thomas Paine in December of 1776,
and perfectly sums up the situation in the fledgling United States at that time.
And nowhere was that more acutely felt than in Burlington County.
Thousands of the dreaded Hessians occupied villages and farms all
over the county, and the only defense was a group of 600 militia led
by a Virginia colonel. Join historian Eric Orange of Burlington County Parks for a discussion of that intriguing time in Burlington County.
